Look for Hallmarks: Hallmarks are stamped imprints on the jewelry that indicate Karat; they typically are stamped on the inside of rings and on inconspicuous surfaces, such as the clasps of chains or earing backs. A "GF" hallmark indicates gold-filled which is very low value.
Weighing your Gold: You can get an approximate weight by using a kitchen scale.
Sentimental value: The jewelry you send to Sell Gold™ will be melted and the pure gold will be recovered. If a piece of jewelry has sentimental value, keep it.
Costume jewelry is frequently gold plated and is very low value. A simple way to test whether a piece is plated is to scratch it a few times with an emery board and put a drop or two of white vinegar on the surface. If it turns color it's plated.
